Trexel’s microcellular foaming technology has been used in paper path components for copiers and printers for the past 20 years.  Adoption has primarily been driven by improvements in dimensional stability which is critical to movement of the paper through the device and print quality.

Uniform Shrinkage and Improved Pin Retention

The MuCell® microcellular foaming technology reduces residual stress patterns in injection molded parts.  These stress patterns lead to non-uniform shrinkage and warpage in injection molded parts.  Reducing part weight by as little as 5% through foaming results in a part with more uniform overall shrinkage as molded and better dimensional stability with thermal cycling.

Improved dimensional stability can also lead to a reduction in cycle time for filled materials as cooling time is often extended to minimize warpage issues.  These benefits are now being applied to a range of products in electrical connectors and power control modules where more uniform shrinkage can improve pin retention in power control modules and eliminate twist and breakage in flex fingers used for pin retention.
